The Times of India Film Awards will be held at a number of locations in the Lower Mainland.

The 2013 Times of India Film Awards (TOIFA) are coming to Vancouver in April as the city has been chosen for the inaugural hosting of the awards.

The TOIFA awards will be held between April 4 and 6 across several locations in the Lower Mainland.

B.C. is spending $9.5 million in matching funding towards hosting the festival. The province has also earmarked another $1.5 million for related events.

$1 will be donated to the BC chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation by Beacon News for every completed reader survey. Support a great cause today!

The local economy is expected to gain between $13 and $18 million from tourism and other event-related activity.

Long term gains of hosting the TOIFA awards could also prove to be lucrative.

The awards are a major event in the Indian cinema industry, currently the world’s largest by the number of films produced each year, and will be watched by millions of fans from around the world.

B.C. also expects to gain from attracting more Indian investment and creating a demand for its products in the third largest economy in Asia.

Critics have denounced B.C.’s bid to host the TOIFA awards as a political gimmick to garner South Asian votes ahead of the upcoming May provincial election.
